Dan Rather on the Daily Show points out and firmly believes that a lot of the "reporting" that has been going on in the media about Afghanistan is frankly wrong.
That's not hard to believe since the media seems to believe they really know what's going on, while not having been there or even involved in anyway.
He indicates the "softpower" strategy really has legs with the military. Who firmly believe it can and will work. I have to say they are much more confident than I am.
Stewart is great because he doesn't just question Republican or Democrat, he questions the whole government. But I believe he is wrong when talking to rather about literacy rates and how quickly a situation can change.
Iran is actually a good example of quick change. Though many rights are impeded there, the beginning of education, women's rights, adequate water, food, and ending mass poverty all starts with lowering fertility rates, which is accomplished thru a pronged approach of education, safe sex, lowering infant mortality rates, etc
All the poorest nations on earth share this statistic in common. They have high fertility rates. from 5 to 7 (that's 5 to 7 children average per family).
Iran lowered its fertility rate from 6.8 in 1982 to 2.6 in 1997. And the next phase has begun for them. Educated youth are rejecting the way things are, women are demanding rights, and the people are not impoverished (think Africa, Afghanistan, that's true ultra poor).
So that kind of change can happen fairly rapidly. The Dan Rather segment is the last segment of the full episode.
